What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is shaped like a screw and surgically placed below the gumline. They are designed to restore the missing root structure of teeth, integrating with your jawbone to provide it with stimulation and blood supply that can keep it from deteriorating over time. Once the implants have integrated with your bone, they also serve as a strong, unwavering foundation for any type of restoration to be attached to, including a free-standing crown, bridge, or denture.

Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants offer a variety of benefits that make them a top choice for patients. Some of the advantages that you’ll be able to enjoy if you choose this state-of-the-art tooth-replacement solution include:
Day-to-Day Benefits
Dental implants in Minnetonka continue to be popular for several reasons, starting with the fact that they offer the following day-to-day benefits:
- Improved Self-Esteem: Unlike other tooth-replacement options, dental implants don’t slip or shift unexpectedly. Not only that, but the restorations that are secured on top are custom-made to suit your dental needs, face shape, and aesthetic goals.
- Restored Bite Strength: Since dental implants are secured to your jawbone and are crafted from only the best materials, they can restore up to 80% of your natural bite power. As a result, you can say goodbye to the days of eating the same bland, soft foods on repeat.
- Clearer Communication: Even just one missing tooth can negatively impact your speaking patterns. The good news is that dental implants can fill any gaps in your smile, restoring your normal speaking patterns in the process.
Health Benefits
Additionally, dental implants can have a positive impact on your oral and overall health due to the fact that they:
- Allow You to Eat a Variety of Foods: As we mentioned above, dental implants can restore the strength of your bite and, in turn, allow you to eat a greater variety of foods. This makes it significantly easier to get the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your body needs.
- Are Easy to Maintain: Dental implants don’t require any special cleaning products. Instead, you can keep them in pristine condition with the same best practices you use to care for your natural teeth, like scheduling a checkup with our dentist in Minnetonka every six months.
- Prevent Dental Drift: As you may have guessed from the name, dental drift is when the teeth surrounding the gap gradually move into the open space. This can create several issues, but, fortunately, dental implants can replace the missing tooth to prevent those from happening.
Long-Term Benefits
Patients who are struggling with tooth loss also love dental implants because:
- They Are Long-Lasting – Usually, dental bridges and dentures last anywhere from 5-15 years. Dental implants, on the other hand, have a 35+ year lifespan with good oral hygiene and professional maintenance.
- They Have a High Success Rate – The success rate of dental implants is over 95%. Throughout the smile-rebuilding process, we will walk you through what to do to minimize your chances of failure, starting with not using tobacco products.
- They Help Prevent Bone Loss – Dental implants are the only tooth-replacement solution that restores the root of your tooth. The stimulation this provides to your jawbone helps prevent bone loss as well as maintain your youthful face shape.
Dental Implant Treatment Options
Based on your initial consultation with our team at Holger Dental Group, we may recommend one or more of the following dental implant treatment options below for you. Our team can help you weigh the pros and cons of each of your options as well as answer any questions you may have to make sure you make the best choice for you!
Fixed Implant Dentures
Our fixed signature implant denture package is a customized denture that is permanently affixed within the mouth to dental implants, sometimes called All-on-X implant dentures. The result is not removable and retained entirely by dental implants, making the restoration feel, look, and function like your natural teeth.
Snap-In Implant Dentures
Our snap-in implant dentures are another popular option for patients missing all of their teeth along an arch. They’re secured to dental implants for more stability, but they can be removed to be cleaned. These are a step up from traditional dentures.
Single Implants & Implant Bridges
For our patients looking to restore one or several missing teeth in their smile, we also offer implant crowns and bridges. These involve the placement of between one and three dental implants made to support either a free-standing crown or a dental bridge.
Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants
You cannot know for sure how much your tooth replacement journey will cost until you have attended an in-depth consultation. At Holger Dental Group in Minnetonka, we provide our patients with transparent pricing and detailed cost estimates, allowing you to make fully informed decisions about what treatment plan you want to move forward with. If needed, we can also walk you through your financing options to help split your cost into smaller monthly payments.
Preliminary Treatments & Dental Implant Surgery
Some patients need preliminary care before their dental implant surgery. For example, you might need tooth extractions, bone grafting, or gum disease treatment. Each of these services comes with its own fee.
The cost of the surgery itself can vary depending on its details. Since we are able to perform this complex procedure in-house, you will not have to worry about dealing with the pricing structure of an outside specialist.
The Parts of Your Dental Implant
Some additional aspects of your treatment that can affect cost include:
- The number of implants you need
- The size, type, and manufacturer of your implants
- The size, type, and nature of the restoration that will get attached to your implants
At Holger Dental Group, we strive to use only top-quality materials from well-reputed brands. If you have questions about where your implants or restorations are coming from, you are welcome to ask!
How Dental Implants Can Save You Money
Dental implants cost more upfront than non-implant forms of tooth replacement. However, they can actually be a better long-term value! For example, dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime. Their cost per day over the course of a few decades is quite low. In contrast, traditional dentures need to be replaced every 5 – 7 years or so — over time, that can really add up!
Additionally, dental implants protect both your oral and overall health, so they may allow you to spend less money on medical and dental care throughout your lifetime.
Does My Dental Insurance Cover Dental Implants?
Some dental insurance plans partially cover the cost of implants, whereas others do not. Even if your plan does not apply to the implants themselves, it will likely cover at least a portion of the cost of preliminary care or your final restoration.
Our team can help you understand how your benefits apply and file insurance claims on your behalf. We will also provide transparent pricing information so you understand your out-of-pocket obligation after your insurance accepts your claim.
Making Dental Implants Affordable
Outside of insurance, other provisions that may make it easier to afford dental implants include:
- HDG Loyalty Program: Our in-house membership plan covers preventive care and provides a discount on all additional services. Signing up is easy, the fee is reasonable, and you can start to use your benefits immediately.
- Financing: We accept third-party financing through companies like CareCredit, Proceed, and Cherry. If you would like to apply for a low-interest payment plan, our team can walk you through the process.
Dental Implant Post-Op Instructions
Our experts are here for you along every step of your journey towards a whole, healthy, and functional smile. If you ever have any questions or concerns, you can count on our team’s guidance, ensuring a smooth experience. While we will provide you with more detailed and specific post-operative instructions following each step of your dental implant process, we have also included some more general instructions here to give you an idea of what to expect.
What to Do Directly After Dental Implant Surgery
As a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Dr. Holger is able to complete the entire process in-house for your convenience and comfort. Directly following the surgical placement of your implants, you will need to take similar precautions as you would after a tooth extraction. Avoid drinking from a straw, using tobacco products, and disturbing the surgical sites with your hand or tongue.
Common Side-Effects During Recovery
As your gums begin to heal around your dental implants and your implants fuse with your jawbone, you can expect to feel some mild discomfort and soreness. This typically lasts for a few days following your surgery, and we advise you to call your implant dentist in Minnetonka if the pain becomes worse or persists. Here are some of the more common effects that you can expect after your procedure:
- Minor soreness that can be relieved with an over-the-counter pain medication.
- Swelling of the gums near the surgical site or the face following the procedure (this typically does not last longer than two weeks). You can help bring it down by applying a cold compress to the face for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off.
- Occasional bleeding that can be slowed by applying a clean piece of gauze and gentle amount of pressure to the area.
Your Diet After Dental Implant Surgery
Following your dental implant placement surgery, you will want to maintain a soft diet for several days. This will help preserve the blood clots and allow for a more seamless healing process. Before your procedure, stock your kitchen with:
- Soup (eat cold or room temperature)
- Yogurt
- Ice cream
- Smoothies
- Scrambled eggs
- Pasta
- Mashed potatoes
- Pudding
- Oatmeal (eat cold or room temperature)
Post-Op Health & Oral Hygiene
Although you may be recovering and sore, it’s still important to maintain a good at-home oral hygiene routine as you heal. This will also help you avoid post-operative complications that could compromise your dental implants, such as an infection. Be sure to:
- Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time using a soft bristled toothbrush. Be extra gentle when cleaning near the implant site.
- Rinse your mouth with lukewarm saltwater two to three times a day, especially following meals. Do not spit the water out. Instead, let it fall from your mouth into the sink.
- Don’t use mouthwash that contains alcohol.
What to Do After Your New Teeth are Attached
The final healing process of your journey will be after we have secured your final dental restoration to your implants. The biggest post-operative instruction is to enjoy your new smile! You may feel some mild sensitivity in your gums, and having a complete set of teeth may feel unnatural at first. However, after a couple of weeks, you should feel more comfortable.
Dental Implant FAQs
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
With the proper maintenance, including bi-annual checkups and cleanings with our dentists in Minneapolis, as well as good at-home oral hygiene, studies have shown that dental implants can last for 20 years or longer. This is several times longer than traditional dentures and bridges!
Can You Extract a Tooth and Place a Dental Implant on the Same Day?
Depending on your unique circumstances, our team may be able to extract a tooth and place a dental implant on the same day with All-on-X treatment. However, our team can only let you know if you’re a good candidate after we’ve had a chance to examine your mouth, so don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation!
What Do Dental Implants Have to Offer That Regular Dentures Don’t?
Implant dentures offer patients a variety of unique benefits that traditional dentures don’t, which is why they’re such a popular treatment for replacing missing teeth among our patients. Because the dental implants act as an unmoving foundation for dentures, you won’t ever have to worry about them shifting in your mouth when you eat or speak, and with a lifespan of up to four times longer than regular dentures, they’re an excellent investment.
