What Sedation Options Do You Have?
If you’re interested in sedation, we encourage you to learn more about the different options that we offer and when they’re most effective. From fast-acting laughing gas that will allow you to carry on with the rest of your day after treatment to IV sedation that’s ideal for more extensive procedures, we assure that you’re in safe hands no matter what type of sedation you undergo.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is excellent for those with mild to moderate dental anxiety, or for our patients who require longer treatments. This sedation comes in the form of a pill, typically Halcion, that we’ll administer about an hour before your scheduled appointment. You will relax with soft music and a blanket in a darkened room while the medication takes effect. That way, you will be relaxed and your visit will be more comfortable and enjoyable. You will need to have a trusted friend or family member ready to drop you off and pick you up from your visit.
IV Sedation
For our patients who are receiving surgical procedures, like dental implant placement, connective tissue grafting, or wisdom tooth extraction, we may recommend IV sedation. This is the fastest-acting method of sedation that we offer in-house, as the medication will be directly administered into your blood stream by our partnering team of nurse anesthestists. In most cases, patients who undergo IV sedation remember little-to-nothing about their visits, making it excellent for those with more severe dental phobia. This sedation method will also cause you to feel extremely drowsy, so it’s likely that you’ll be asleep during your procedure.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas by our patients, is administered in the treatment chair. We’ll place a small nose mask on you that will allow you to breathe in a colorless, odorless gas. Because the effects kick-in quickly and don’t last long after the nose mask is removed, you won’t need to worry about taking the rest of the day off work or having someone pick you up from your visit.
